Belleville , ONT – Friday, January 20, 2012 - The United Way of Quinte announced a milestone accomplishment at last night’s annual Achievement Celebration held at the Empire Theatre.  Representing the greatest increase in its fundraising in the last 10 years, the audience heard that the 2011 annual campaign hit $1,807,488 a 10% increase over last year’s achievement of $1,636,268.

“This number tells a story, it tells me that the people of the Quinte Region get it and they understand how to build community, what it means and how important it is to support those in need. It tells me, that even during these challenging economic times that people care, they care about our community, they care about their neighbours, they want to make a difference,” said 2011 Campaign Chair David Allen. “We should never underestimate the generosity, kindness and compassion of people throughout the Quinte Region.”

Each year, the United Way of Quinte holds a celebration to announce its campaign results and honour all those whose efforts contributed to its success.

“I am truly in awe of the dedication and passion of our Campaign Cabinet, individual and group efforts in our workplaces, local companies and the individuals in our communities throughout Hastings and PrinceEdwardCounties,” said Judi Gilbert, Executive Director.  “We would not be announcing this milestone in our history without them!  It is significant and simply incredible that we have been able to exceed our goal in such tough economic times.”

The money raised during this year’s campaign will continue to support the not for profit charitable sector in Hastings and Prince Edward counties.  This year’s growth will also allow the organization to develop new funding streams that will help support other community wide initiatives and youth programs.

According to Rosemary Judd-Archer, Chair of the Board of Directors, the United Way’s success is dependent upon three inter-related pieces - commitment and vision of its Board, leadership and expertise of management and staff and generosity and support of the communities it serves.  “This year’s incredible result certainly says to me that we are firing on all cylinders.  The Board is moving the organization forward, our management team and staff members are focused on achieving results and our donors - individuals, workplace teams and companies – have demonstrated their belief in us through their incredible financial support.”

The event included recognizing individuals and many workplaces for their outstanding contribution to United Way of Quinte.

Recognition included Mr. Danny Nickle, Winner of the Jack Hartling Volunteer of the Year Award, for his extraordinary dedication to United Way of Quinte. Mr. Maurice Rollins, recognized for his generous humanitarian efforts and to Mr. David Allen, Campaign Chair and Regional Director of the YMCA of Central East Ontario, in recognition of his unwavering dedication to the United Way of Quinte 2011 campaign. Mr. Allen will be returning as the 2012 Campaign Chair.

Outstanding Commitment to the United Way of Quinte by a workplace included Avaya, Belleville Police Service, Best Buy, CN Railway, City of Quinte West, Community Living Belleville & Area, GH Manufacturing, Nestle, Procter & Gamble, Veridian Connections and 8 Wing/CFB Trenton.

According to Judi Gilbert each of these individuals and workplaces are most deserving of this recognition. “We are extremely fortunate to have such wonderful support. Each of these award winners has played a significant role in helping us reach this year’s milestone.”
